(Download) Word Template with Sections, Page Numbers and Styles

It’s TechTuesday and you deserve a template! Figuring out how to create a “complex” legal document can challenging for many of us. What do I mean by complex? I tend to think of it as a document with reference tables (TOC, TOA) and numbered with roman numerals, arabic numbers on the body of the document, and perhaps an appendix or exhibit section with even different page numbering. While Word has the capability to do all this (and more!), it’s not as intuitive as we would like. So how about a template with all that infrastructure ready to go!?
I’ve created a very simple document template with a title page, reference tables section, the main body of the document, and a bonus exhibit section. I’ve defaulted the font to Arial (sorry, had to pick one) but you can easily change the default font and that will domino down to the other Styles in the documents. Styles!? Yes, the template is designed with a set of Styles. Understanding Styles in Word is critical to quickly creating legal documents that are consistent in formatting and will drop a Table of Contents into the document with just a couple of clicks.
The template contains filler text mixed with tips, descriptions and how-to’s. I hope it’s helpful! If you are looking to learn more about Styles be sure to attend our two-part, in-person workshops at the Bar. If you are a member of SDCBA, you can make an appointment with me for some one-on-one help with this template or one of your own!
